Finding pet cremation jewelry in The Colony
Water frames daily life in The Colony, which wraps around Lewisville Lake's eastern bays, and many memorials here borrow from it: a flat stone engraved with a name and set in a shady bed, a hand-blown glass keepsake swirled with blue, a framed photograph taken on the shoreline trail at dusk. Others prefer an understated urn or a locket. Ashes can be divided so each household member keeps a portion.
Lots in The Colony are often compact, and many yards back onto alleys, so outdoor memorials here tend to be small and low: a flush granite marker, a bronze tablet screwed to the fence, a planter with a redbud or cedar elm set in during the cool months. Summer highs in the mid-90s and spring hail are why solid stone and metal outlast resin figurines.
Getting to a jeweler for ring sizing can mean a drive from The Colony to a larger centre such as Frisco. If you're ordering a ring by mail, ask the maker for a ring sizer, measure at the end of the day when your fingers are slightly larger and check it twice. Sealed rings are hard to resize, so it's worth getting this right first time.
With roughly 46,196 residents, The Colony is the 79th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Frisco, about 6 miles (10 km) away, which is where some providers serving The Colony are based.
For a second opinion on price, Lewisville (6 miles, a larger centre), Frisco (6 miles, a larger centre) and Little Elm (7 miles) are close enough that their providers cover The Colony routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
Our estimate
17,000
How many dog- or cat-owning households The Colony has (estimate)
How we calculated this
46,196 ÷ 2.5 = 18,478 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 17,000. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
1,400
Estimated dog and cat losses in The Colony each year
How we calculated this
17,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,400 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Why ashes jewelry is familiar (or new) in Texas
The cremation share in Texas sits near 55.7%[5] and has been climbing. Families in the middle of that shift often have one relative with an urn and another with a grave, and pet aftercare can mirror the split. A pendant works either way: it sits as comfortably beside a burial plot as beside an urn on the mantel.

Wearing ash jewelry through The Colony's seasons
In The Colony's hottest stretch, when July averages about 96°F, people wear lighter clothes and the pendant rests on bare skin. That collects more moisture than a piece under a shirt, so a smooth-backed design without crevices is easier to keep clean. Titanium and glass cope with sweat better than plated brass.
Sweat is the quiet enemy of a screw-top pendant. In the hotter months in The Colony, especially June, July, August and September, salt and moisture on skin can work their way into the thread over time. Make sure the screw is sealed with the adhesive supplied, wipe the pendant with a soft dry cloth after a hot day and check the closure every few weeks. It's a two-second habit that avoids a lost pinch of ashes.

Prices by metal, glass and diamond
Memorial diamonds have the widest price range of anything on this page. Some labs advertise stones for as little as $750–$995[6], while a larger lab charges $3,499[7] for 0.25 carat and $15,000 for a full carat[8], roughly $14,000 to $15,000 per carat at any size[9]. For most The Colony families, a silver or glass piece does the same emotional job for a fraction of that.

Mailing, dividing and scattering: the rules in Texas
Pet ashes are handled very differently from human remains in most places, Texas included. There's no register, no permit to divide them and no limit on how many pieces you make. Rules only return when ashes leave your home, whether onto public land, into water or into the mail. Here's what applies locally.
Texas keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers The Colony.
We keep Texas's burial and scattering rules in one place: the Texas rules summary. Before a home burial in The Colony, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
Getting a memorial piece made, step by step
- Ask for keepsakes before you leave the clinic. While your pet is still with the practice, staff can generally cut a lock of fur and press a paw print; after the body has left for the crematory, it's too late.
- Check the cremation form says individual or private. Communal cremation doesn't return ashes, and without ashes a filled pendant isn't possible.
- Write a note on the form asking for about a teaspoon in its own small bag, labeled with your pet's name.
- Let the first days pass. By our estimate, ashes are usually back with you in 3 to 14 days[11], and no jewelry decision has to be made before they arrive.
- Start with one simple piece. A steel or silver pendant you fill yourself is enough to begin with; custom work can come later, once you know what you like wearing.
- Fill it with someone you trust beside you. Having a friend or partner sitting with you tends to make the moment gentler.
Sharing the memory with family
The Colony began as a planned community in the 1970s, and some of its original homes have now seen two or three generations of pets. A shelf holding several small urns and collars is not unusual. Whether you share the loss widely or keep it close, the memorial itself can wait. Ink prints of paws and noses, and clipped fur, can't; request them before cremation.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Frisco to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Frisco (roughly 6 miles from The Colony) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from The Colony?
Usually yes. Lewisville is about 6 miles away, Frisco is about 6 miles away and Little Elm is about 7 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How does The Colony's weather affect pet aftercare?
July is the hottest month in The Colony, with average highs around 96°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Winters are mild, with average lows staying above freezing, so outdoor burial or scattering is usually possible year round.
How do Texas attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Texas human cremation rate at about 55.7%[5]. We show it on the The Colony page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
How many pet owners in The Colony might want a keepsake?
By our estimate, roughly 1,400 dogs and cats die in The Colony each year, out of about 17,000 households that have one. One market study found 51%[12] of pet owners are interested in personalized memorials. That's a lot of families thinking about how to keep a pet close, and jewelry is one of the most portable ways.
How much of my pet's ashes does a diamond need?
Far more than a pendant. One US lab asks for about 100 g of ashes, roughly half a cup[13], and a Swiss lab needs at least 150 g of ashes or 5 g of fur[14]. Cremated remains contain very little carbon, which is why labs need so much. Ask whether unused ash is returned before you send anything.
