Keeping your pet close in Bountiful: pendants, rings and glass

Bountiful, Utah

Where Bountiful families get memorial jewelry made

Bountiful's east winds can topple fences and trees, so outdoor memorials here need to be low and solid. A flat granite marker set flush in the ground, or a bronze plaque fixed to a rock, will stay put where a small statue might not. Wind chimes and hanging ornaments are better indoors or in a sheltered corner of a porch.

The view from Bountiful's benches, across the valley to the Great Salt Lake and Antelope Island, is part of what home means for many residents. A print of that view at dusk, or of a favorite switchback in Mueller Park, pairs naturally with an urn. If you would like to scatter some ashes on public land, confirm the rules with whoever manages it before heading out.

Small-town families around Bountiful often buy several simple pieces rather than one elaborate one, so everyone who loved the pet can have something. A handful of steel or silver pendants filled at the kitchen table, with the main urn staying on the mantel, is a common and perfectly lovely way to do it. The bigger custom commission can come later if you want one.

Bountiful is home to about 44,988 people, the 22nd-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Bountiful are based about 8 miles away in Salt Lake City, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.

Our pages for North Salt Lake (3 miles), Salt Lake City (8 miles, a larger centre) and Farmington (8 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Bountiful as well.

Our estimate

16,500

Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Bountiful

How we calculated this

44,988 ÷ 2.5 = 17,995 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 16,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.

Our estimate

1,400

Estimated dog and cat losses in Bountiful each year

How we calculated this

16,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,400 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

How Utah feels about cremation, and what that means for jewelry

With cremation at roughly 46.1%[5] across Utah, wearing ashes might prompt questions from neighbors or older relatives. You're free to keep it private. Plenty of memorial pieces look like ordinary lockets, bar necklaces or signet rings, and a glass bead with ash inside reads as simple art glass to anyone who doesn't know.

The Utah percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Bountiful, not as a count of pets.

Bountiful weather, water and your memorial piece

If you're mailing ashes to a maker from Bountiful in winter, snow and ice can slow deliveries by a day or two. The ashes aren't affected by cold, but tracking matters more when parcels sit in depots. Send early in the week, choose a service with tracking and a signature, and ask the maker to confirm by email the day it arrives.

Winter in Bountiful is hard on glass in one specific way: sudden temperature change. A glass pendant that's been out in the cold and then goes straight under a hot shower can, in rare cases, crack. Let it warm up to room temperature first. The bigger risk is a fall on ice, so if you're heading out on a slippery morning, tuck the pendant under a layer rather than letting it swing.

What you'll likely pay, from steel to diamond

The headline price is rarely the final one. Chains are often extra: one maker's custom silver print charm is $143 before a silver chain adds about $59 to $79[6]. Gold-plated ash pendants run about $88 to $170[7] at a retailer where solid 14k starts near $1,300. Add filling, engraving and insured shipping, and ask any Bountiful seller for the delivered total, chain included.

What Utah allows with your pet's ashes

One practical point matters before any jewelry decision: the cremation has to be individual if you want ashes back, since communal cremations don't return them. After that, Utah leaves the ashes largely to you. What follows summarizes local scattering and burial points, useful because most of the ashes will still need a home once a pendant is filled.

Utah keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Bountiful.

Home burial and scattering are governed at the Utah level first; our Utah rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Bountiful or your HOA adds anything.

Your order, one step at a time

  1. Ask for keepsakes before you leave the clinic. Staff can usually clip fur and take a paw print while your pet is still there; once the body goes for cremation, that chance has passed.
  2. Check the cremation form says individual or private. Communal cremation doesn't return ashes, and without ashes a filled pendant isn't possible.
  3. Write a note on the form asking for about a teaspoon in its own small bag, labeled with your pet's name.
  4. Let the first days pass. By our estimate, ashes are usually back with you in 3 to 14 days[9], and no jewelry decision has to be made before they arrive.
  5. Start with one simple piece. A self-fill steel or silver pendant is plenty at first; custom work can follow once you know what you want to wear.
  6. Fill it with someone you trust beside you. Having a friend or partner sitting with you tends to make the moment gentler.

Sharing the memory with family

Many Bountiful families have lived in one house for decades, and the garden may already hold markers for animals who came before. Setting a new stone beside the older ones can feel like adding a name to a family record. Households in newer homes or apartments can do the same indoors with an urn and photo on the mantel, or a pendant holding a pinch of ash.

Questions people ask

Is cremation common in Utah?

For people, yes: about 46.1%[5] of Utah deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Bountiful follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Bountiful?

Usually yes. North Salt Lake is about 3 miles away, Salt Lake City is about 8 miles away and Farmington is about 8 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Roughly how many pets die in Bountiful each year?

Our estimate is around 1,400. It comes from Bountiful's population (about 44,988), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 16,500 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.

How does Bountiful's weather affect pet aftercare?

July is the hottest month in Bountiful, with average highs around 87°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February, November and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.

Can I use my pet's fur instead of ashes?

Yes. Fur can't go into molten glass, but it sets well in resin, where you can still see its color. Some memorial-diamond labs can also work from fur; one Swiss lab needs about 5 g[10]. Fur has to be clipped before cremation, so if your pet is still with you, it's worth taking a little from a hidden spot now.

How long does a memorial diamond take to make?

Much longer than any other piece. One US lab quotes 7–10 months[11] from submission to delivery, a Swiss lab about 12 months[12], and across three providers the average is about 8.5 months[13]. If you want something to wear sooner, many people order a simple pendant first and add the diamond later.
