Tooele, Utah
Jewelers, glass artists and online makers near Tooele
Many Tooele families have favorite places in Settlement Canyon or up toward Deseret Peak in the Stansburys, and some would like to release a portion of the ashes there. Land around the valley may be national forest, Bureau of Land Management ground or private, so find out who manages the spot and follow their rules, staying away from springs and streams. Keeping a portion at home leaves the option open.
Tooele's mining and military history, and the rugged ranges that ring the valley, give many homes a practical, no-frills character, and memorials here often follow suit: a name cut into a fieldstone, a steel plaque, or a pine box made in the garage. For something more personal, a frame holding the pet's collar and a favorite snapshot can stand next to the ashes on a shelf.
One of the nice things about a town the size of Tooele is that someone local may have done this before. The person who engraves trophies, the jeweler who repairs watches or the potter at the weekend market may be willing to help with a small commission, and they'll often charge less than a city studio. Ask around; people are usually glad to help with something like this.
About 42,270 people live in Tooele, which makes it the 23rd-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover. Salt Lake City, roughly 27 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Tooele run from there.
Families in Tooele often end up using a provider from Herriman (15 miles), Magna (17 miles) and South Jordan (17 miles, a larger centre). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
Our estimate
15,500
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Tooele
How we calculated this
42,270 ÷ 2.5 = 16,908 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 15,500. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
1,300
Tooele families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
15,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,300 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

What local customs mean for a memorial piece
With about 46.1%[5] of people in Utah choosing cremation, local jewelers and crematories may carry fewer memorial pieces than in high-cremation areas. Expect to order more by mail and to ask a couple of shops before you find someone to fill a pendant. None of that makes the result any less good; it just means a bit more planning.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Utah figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Tooele tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Tooele weather, water and your memorial piece
Big seasonal swings are tough on resin. A fur or ash resin piece that bakes in a Tooele car in summer and then sits in a cold car in winter can cloud or develop tiny cracks over the years. Keep resin pieces on your person or indoors, and let glass pendants warm up gradually after a cold day before a hot shower.
Tooele's range, from about 24°F in January to about 94°F in July, is an argument for two pieces. Some people wear a sealed ring or a glass bead in summer and switch to a pendant under their layers in winter, when rings slip. Both can come from one small portion of ashes.

Prices by metal, glass and diamond
Prices depend far more on the material than on where you live. Across US retailers, a stainless steel ash pendant starts from $19.95[6], sterling silver necklaces run $88–$298[7], and a solid 14k gold pendant costs $1,298–$4,750[8]. That's why entry-level silver is about 4.4 times entry-level steel[9], and entry-level gold about 15 times silver[10]. A Tooele jeweler may charge a little more or less, but these are the ranges to compare against.

What Utah allows with your pet's ashes
Rules around pet ashes are light compared with human ones. In most places, including Utah, nobody regulates keeping or wearing them. What's worth checking is the rest of the plan: where you can scatter or bury what's left, and how to send a small portion by post if your maker isn't local. The details below cover the local side.

A calm plan for getting the piece made
- Call the crematory or your vet to find out if they stock jewelry, will set a portion of ashes aside for it, or can point you to a nearby jeweler who does fills.
- Compare two or three options near Tooele: a jeweler in town, the crematory's own counter, and an online studio that specializes in ash pieces.
- Check allergies and sizing for everyone getting a piece.
- Decide on engraving. Name, dates, a paw print or nothing at all; approve the wording and proof in writing.
- Arrange the ashes. You can deliver them by hand, do the filling at home, or post them using a tracked, signed-for service that the maker has okayed.
- Wear it and check it. Look at the seal and clasp every few weeks, and take it off to swim or garden.
- Store it safely at night in a soft pouch, away from perfume, heat and hard surfaces.
More ways to keep your pet in daily life
Dry wind and fierce sun are hard on garden tributes in Tooele. Pick heavy stone or bronze, and anchor it low, ideally on a poured base, so gusts cannot shift it. For a planted memorial, a native juniper, a cliffrose or another drought-hardy shrub will cope with the valley's thin rainfall. Indoors, urns, pendants and framed prints stay safe from dust and the elements.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Tooele?
Usually yes. Herriman is about 15 miles away, Magna is about 17 miles away and South Jordan is about 17 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is Tooele big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 15,500 Tooele households keep a dog or cat and around 1,300 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 42,270), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Why does the Tooele page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 46.1%[5] of Utah residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Tooele?
January, February and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 94°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
How much ash goes into a pendant?
Very little. A typical ashes pendant holds only a pinch, about a teaspoon at most[11], and ash-in-glass pieces use only about 1/8–1/2 tsp[12] of ashes (per one urn retailer's guide). That means even a small cat leaves enough for several pieces with plenty left for an urn. Our jewelry ash capacity guide shows how many pieces one pet can fill.
Can the crematory near Tooele set ashes aside for jewelry?
Usually yes, if you ask before the ashes are returned. Most crematories will pack a teaspoon or so separately in a small labeled bag, which saves you opening the main container later. Your vet in Tooele can pass the request on. Some regional crematories also sell pendants and will fill one before sending everything back.
