Washington, Utah
Finding pet cremation jewelry in Washington
Washington was founded in the 1850s by Latter-day Saint settlers sent to grow cotton, and the stone cotton mill they built still stands. For families with long roots here, a plain, handmade memorial can echo that pioneer heritage: a pine box, a fieldstone marker, or a quilt square stitched with the pet's name and kept folded beside the urn.
Desert sun is merciless on outdoor memorials. In Washington, painted finishes and resin fade and crack within a summer or two, while granite, bronze and stoneware fired at high heat hold up. For a living memorial, a desert willow, a globemallow or another native plant suits the climate and sips very little water. Inside, an urn or pendant is shielded from the extreme heat entirely.
One of the nice things about a town the size of Washington is that someone local may have done this before. The person who engraves trophies, the jeweler who repairs watches or the potter at the weekend market may be willing to help with a small commission, and they'll often charge less than a city studio. Ask around; people are usually glad to help with something like this.
Washington is home to about 37,107 people, the 29th-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover.
If you want to compare providers, look at St. George (6 miles, a larger centre), Hurricane (7 miles) and Cedar City (44 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
Our estimate
13,500
Washington: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
37,107 ÷ 2.5 = 14,843 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 13,500. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
1,150
Washington families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
13,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,150 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

Cremation habits in Utah
Cremation is chosen for only about 46.1%[5] of people who die in Utah, so a local jeweler may never have been asked to fill a pendant. Don't read hesitation as refusal. Explain that the chamber takes a pinch, that you'll bring it in a sealed bag and that the job needs a steady hand and a drop of adhesive. Many agree once they know what's involved.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Utah figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Washington tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Seasons, sweat and cold: jewelry care in Washington
Climate affects rings more than pendants. Fingers swell in heat and shrink in cold, so if you're ordering a sealed ring in Washington, measure at the end of the day in a comfortable room and ask about a comfort-fit band. It's the single most common reason memorial rings get returned.

What pet cremation jewelry costs for Washington families
Most pet cremation jewelry in the US costs $30–$300+[6] (per one large retailer), and the table below shows where each material sits. Memorial diamonds are in a different league: a quarter-carat stone is listed at $3,499[7] by one of the larger US labs, about 27 times a typical sterling pendant[8]. If you're in Washington and weighing a diamond against a set of silver pieces for the whole family, that ratio is worth keeping in mind.

Rules for keeping, sharing and mailing ashes in Utah
Wearing ashes is a private choice, and Utah asks for no permit or form to keep a portion in a pendant or ring. The questions that do carry rules come afterwards: where the remaining ashes may be scattered or buried, and how a portion may travel if your maker is elsewhere. Below is the Utah side; a postal carrier's own conditions sit alongside it.
To find your county or city office in Utah, start with the official Utah local government directory.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Utah level first; our Utah rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Washington or your HOA adds anything.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Wait until you're ready. Ashes keep indefinitely, and there's no deadline for jewelry.
- Collect prints and fur early if you can. Paw prints, nose prints and fur can only be taken before cremation, and they open up more options later.
- Measure carefully. Size a ring late in the day, hold a chain to your collarbone to judge length, and check with each relative about metals that irritate their skin.
- Ask the maker how they handle ashes. How much they need, how they label it, whether they return what they don't use.
- If you mail ashes, pack them properly. Seal them in a small bag, cushion it inside a sturdy box and use the service the maker names, with tracking.
- Approve a proof for any engraving, especially paw or nose prints, before the piece is made.
More ways to keep your pet in daily life
Washington's red cliffs and black lava rock make a striking backdrop, and some families choose memorials that echo the landscape: a red sandstone marker, a basalt slab engraved with a name, or a photo of a favorite desert trail at sunset. Placing the urn beside that photo brings a bit of the view indoors, where it will not bake in the afternoon sun.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Utah?
For people, yes: about 46.1%[5] of Utah deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Washington follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Washington?
Usually yes. St. George is about 6 miles away, Hurricane is about 7 miles away and Cedar City is about 44 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Roughly how many pets die in Washington each year?
Our estimate is around 1,150. It comes from Washington's population (about 37,107), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 13,500 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
How much of my pet's ashes does a diamond need?
Far more than a pendant. One US lab asks for about 100 g of ashes, roughly half a cup[10], and a Swiss lab needs at least 150 g of ashes or 5 g of fur[11]. Cremated remains contain very little carbon, which is why labs need so much. Ask whether unused ash is returned before you send anything.
Can I get my pet's paw or nose print engraved on jewelry?
Yes. A laser engraver can put your pet's actual print on a pendant, ring or tag, working from an ink print, a clay impression or a sharp photo. A custom sterling silver print charm costs $143 + chain[12] at one US maker. Always ask for a proof first, because smudged prints can engrave as blotches.
What metal should I choose if I have sensitive skin?
Titanium, niobium, platinum and nickel-free gold are the safest choices. Solid sterling silver suits most people but tarnishes. Surgical stainless steel is tough and inexpensive but contains some nickel, so very sensitive skin may react. If you can, try a sample from a Washington jeweler for a few hours before ordering a sealed piece.
