How Munster owners get a memorial piece made
The Aasee lake, the tree-lined Promenade around the old town and the quiet lanes of the Münsterland are places many families link with their animals. Some would like part of the ashes to rest in nature. Rules on scattering vary in Germany, so check with the local authority first, or consider a biodegradable urn in your own garden or a pet cemetery plot.
In a Münster flat, memorials tend to be small and personal: an urn on a shelf with a photo, a pendant holding a pinch of ashes, or a paw print impression. If you might move after your studies or for work, something compact and portable is easier to keep with you. Ask for keepsake containers if family want a share of the ashes.
Many Munster owners start with the crematory that handled their pet. Some sell pendants and charms at the counter, and most will portion out a small amount of ashes for jewelry when asked, which saves you opening the main container later. If the range is small, you can still buy elsewhere and bring the portion to a local jeweler to fill.
Munster's population is around 314,000, the 6th-largest of the 6 North Rhine-Westphalia communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Munster are based about 32 miles away in Dortmund, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
If you want to compare providers, look at Dortmund (32 miles), Essen (44 miles) and Dusseldorf (62 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

Cremation habits in Germany
Where roughly 76.0%[1] of the population of Germany ends up cremated, many homes already have an urn on a shelf, sometimes more than one. That familiarity means a pet's ashes don't feel unusual in the house, and jewelry becomes a way to take a little of them out into the day. Some people wear a piece for a relative and another for a pet on the same chain.
The Germany percentage above is from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Munster, not as a count of pets.
Timing fittings and ceremonies around Munster's weather
Climate affects rings more than pendants. Fingers swell in heat and shrink in cold, so if you're ordering a sealed ring in Munster, measure at the end of the day in a comfortable room and ask about a comfort-fit band. It's the single most common reason memorial rings get returned.

Prices by metal, glass and diamond
Ordering a memorial diamond from Munster usually means working with a Swiss or other European lab, and the deposit is the first thing to plan. One Swiss lab asks for 50% upfront[5] on stones priced $1,400–$40,500[6], and by our estimate diamonds take about 8.5 months on average across three providers[7]. A simple pendant is a fraction of that price and can be worn while you wait.

Before you divide the ashes: North Rhine-Westphalia basics
Rules around pet ashes are light compared with human ones. In most places, including North Rhine-Westphalia, nobody regulates keeping or wearing them. What's worth checking is the rest of the plan: where you can scatter or bury what's left, and how to send a small portion by post if your maker isn't local. The details below cover the local side.
In Germany, human ashes are tightly regulated and usually must go to a cemetery, which is why memorial diamonds from human ashes are typically made abroad. Pet ashes aren't covered by those rules, so keeping, dividing and wearing them is up to you. Ask the Tierkrematorium whether it offers Erinnerungsschmuck (memorial jewelry) or can pack a small portion separately.
A calm plan for getting the piece made
- Wait until you're ready. Ashes don't deteriorate, so a piece can be made whenever it feels right.
- Collect prints and fur early if you can. Once cremation has happened there's no way to take a paw print, nose print or fur clipping, and having them widens what you can order later.
- Measure carefully. Size a ring late in the day, hold a chain to your collarbone to judge length, and check with each relative about metals that irritate their skin.
- Ask the maker how they handle ashes. How much they need, how they label it, whether they return what they don't use.
- If you mail ashes, pack them properly. Put them in a sealed bag first, pad that bag inside a strong box, and send it by the tracked carrier the maker tells you to use.
- Approve a proof for any engraving, especially paw or nose prints, before the piece is made.
More ways to keep your pet in daily life
Germany has a long tradition of pet cemeteries, and many Münsterland families choose a grave or urn plot where they can visit with flowers and a candle. Others plant a tree in the garden or at a family farm. For outdoor memorials, choose stone or metal that can handle Münster's frequent rain and cool, damp winters. Placing it where you'll pass it often keeps it close.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Dortmund to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Dortmund (roughly 32 miles from Munster) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Is cremation common in Germany?
For people, yes: about 76.0%[1] of Germany deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Munster follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Munster?
The closest communities we cover are Dortmund (about 32 miles), Essen (about 44 miles) and Dusseldorf (about 62 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Munster too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
My pet was cremated years ago. Can I still have jewelry made?
Yes. Cremated remains are stable mineral and don't change over time, so ashes from years ago work just as well. Open the urn over a sheet of paper, take a teaspoon with a clean spoon and seal the urn again. If the ashes are in a sealed container you'd rather not open, a Munster jeweler or the original crematory may help.
Who can fill a memorial pendant near Munster?
Try the crematory that handled your pet first; many fill pendants they sell and some will fill one you bought elsewhere. Local jewelers who do repairs are the next option. If no one nearby does it, filling at home is simple: the kit comes with a funnel and adhesive, and it takes about ten minutes.
Do cremation pendants leak?
A well-made pendant with a sealed screw shouldn't. Leaks usually happen when the screw isn't glued and works loose with daily wear. Use the adhesive in the kit, or ask a Munster jeweler to seal it permanently. Glass and memorial diamonds have no opening at all, so they can't leak.
