How Aspen owners get a memorial piece made
Anything outdoors in Aspen faces intense high-altitude sun, deep snowpack and months of freeze-thaw. Carved granite, slate and bronze stand up to that; softer stones and painted finishes crack. A living memorial such as a young aspen or spruce is lovely in theory, but check with a local nursery about what survives your elevation before choosing a tree urn.
The peaks around Aspen shape how many families say goodbye. One common approach is to release a little ash at a high meadow or lakeshore that mattered and keep most of it in an urn at home; another is to wear a pendant on hikes so the companion comes along. The national forest has guidance on scattering, so check first and leave no visible trace.
One of the nice things about a town the size of Aspen is that someone local may have done this before. The person who engraves trophies, the jeweler who repairs watches or the potter at the weekend market may be willing to help with a small commission, and they'll often charge less than a city studio. Ask around; people are usually glad to help with something like this.
Aspen is home to about 6,489 people, the 35th-largest of the 36 Colorado communities we cover.
Families in Aspen often end up using a provider from Vail (39 miles), Grand Junction (93 miles, a larger centre) and Golden (94 miles, a larger centre). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
Our estimate
2,400
How many dog- or cat-owning households Aspen has (estimate)
How we calculated this
6,489 ÷ 2.5 = 2,596 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 2,400. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
200
Aspen families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
2,400 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 200 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

Cremation in Colorado and wearing a little of your pet
With cremation this usual in Colorado (around 77.4%[5] of deaths), friends are less likely to ask why you chose ashes and more likely to ask what you chose. That can be a relief, though it can also bring plenty of well-meant advice. What matters is how the piece feels after a month of wearing it, so take your time choosing.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Colorado figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Aspen tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Timing fittings and ceremonies around Aspen's weather
Whatever Aspen's weather, the biggest risks to a memorial piece are everyday ones: a chain caught on a sweater, sweat in a thread, a glass bead dropped on tile. Choose a sturdy bail and clasp, seal the screw and keep a small pouch handy for when you take it off.

What you'll likely pay, from steel to diamond
Buying for a whole family changes the math. Stainless steel pendants start from $19.95[6], so five of them can cost less than a single sterling necklace from the top of the $88–$298[7] range. For Aspen families dividing ashes between several relatives, a steel set with one silver piece for the person closest to the pet is a common compromise.

Wearing ashes is your call; the rest has rules in Colorado
Before you split the ashes, it helps to know what you'll do with the part that won't go into jewelry, because that's where Colorado's rules come in. Scattering on land you don't own, burying in a shared garden and releasing ashes into water can each carry conditions. The piece you wear carries none.
Colorado keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Aspen.
The Colorado page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Aspen's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Call the crematory or your vet to find out if they stock jewelry, will set a portion of ashes aside for it, or can point you to a nearby jeweler who does fills.
- Compare two or three options near Aspen: a jeweler in town, the crematory's own counter, and an online studio that specializes in ash pieces.
- Check allergies and sizing with each person who'll receive one.
- Decide on engraving. Name, dates, a paw print or nothing at all; approve the wording and proof in writing.
- Arrange the ashes. Hand them over in person, fill them yourself or send them by a tracked, signed service the maker approves.
- Wear it and check it. Every few weeks give the seal and clasp a quick look, and remove it before swimming or gardening.
- Store it safely at night in a soft pouch, somewhere it won't meet perfume, heat or a hard knock.
Sharing the memory with family
Aspen housing is tight: condos, deed-restricted employee units and historic homes on small lots. That pushes most memorials indoors, to a compact urn, a framed portrait or a locket with a pinch of ash. If you have garden space, a flat granite marker nestled among native plants blends with the mountain setting and shrugs off heavy snow that sits for months.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Aspen?
The closest communities we cover are Vail (about 39 miles), Grand Junction (about 93 miles) and Golden (about 94 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Aspen too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Is Aspen big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 2,400 Aspen households keep a dog or cat and around 200 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 6,489), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Why does the Aspen page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 77.4%[5] of Colorado residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
What if my pet had a communal cremation and no ashes came back?
You can still have a meaningful piece. Fur you kept, a paw or nose print taken by the vet, or even a clear photo can be engraved on silver or set in resin. Ask the clinic whether they took a print before your pet left; many do as standard. If you'd like prints of another pet in future, the paw print kit chooser compares the options.
What metal should I choose if I have sensitive skin?
Titanium, niobium, platinum and nickel-free gold are the safest choices. Solid sterling silver suits most people but tarnishes. Surgical stainless steel is tough and inexpensive but contains some nickel, so very sensitive skin may react. If you can, try a sample from an Aspen jeweler for a few hours before ordering a sealed piece.
What if my memorial pendant breaks or I lose it?
If it breaks, stop wearing it and put it in a small sealed bag straight away so no ash is lost. A jeweler can often replace a bail or clasp without opening the chamber. For peace of mind, keep a little spare ash in the urn so a replacement can be filled, and ask whether your home insurance covers jewelry.
